Just treat it like an egg. Put it in the pot with the room-temperature water, like the rest of the eggs, "cook" it with the eggs, and cool it down like the eggs. Very accurate. You'll quickly learn how its markings relate to how you like your eggs. Take notes!
One caveat: It's really a 'Doneness Indicator", not a timer. It doesn't have a bell or a time to set. It just indicates the heat transfer into an egg to indicate doneness.

Here is a tip to prevent your eggs from cracking when you boil them; After placing them in cold water, bring the water to a boil. Then, turn the heat down enough so that the water stays hot but it is no longer boiling. Leave the eggs in the hot water until they are cooked which takes about 12 to 16 minutes to make hard boiled eggs. Alternatively, if you don't want to stand at the stove waiting for the water to come to a boil, you can bring the water to a boil, then turn down the heat and place the eggs in the hot water. Do not turn the heat completely off and leave the eggs in the hot water. If you turn the heat completely off, it'll take too long for the eggs to cook

For various reasons I didn’t cook any hard boiled eggs for a while and I couldn’t find my egg timer when I recently wanted to use it. So, I bought a new one from Mexten and it works perfectly. (It does not have any smell that some purchasers have complained about.)
Of course, I probably don’t have to tell you that about two weeks after I received the new egg timer, I found my old one. :)
